Filmmakers worldwide came to showcase their independent movies at the 2008 American Black Film Festival, August 7th-10th. Celebrating its 12th anniversary, this international film festival provides artists with the opportunity to exhibit their shorts, narrative features and documentaries. The event had a feast of activities to help aspiring movie makers to take their works to the next level with workshops and panel discussions, and concluded with an award ceremony that rewarded and honored participants of the festival. Today’s hottest actors, producers and directors overflowed the red carpet to screen these movies from Halle Berry to Sanaa Lathan to John Singleton.

Writer, Producer and Filmmaker Elijah Kelley world-premiered his second indie Who Killed Bishop Brown? at the festival. This film addresses how deceit, lust and greed cause controversy in the church and how the only peace lies in finding out “who killed Bishop Brown?”

Leading man Vincent M. Ward , best known for his supporting roles on Everybody Hates Chris and CSI Miami, and also a newcomer to HBO hit drama The Wire, Ward takes on his first leading role on the big screen as Bishop Brown. Both Ward and Actor Tyrone Chapman accompanied Kelley on the red carpet.

Actor, Producer and Filmmaker Michael Kimbrew and Writer, Producer and Director Alton Glass debuted their urban horror flick Marco Polo, which takes viewers on an adventurous expedition with explorer Marco Polo. Polo’s spirit rises from the dead to haunt a group of college seniors during their weekend camping trip. In addition, they also released their comedy feature film,Tons of Love starring Capone, Gerald Kelly, Tommy Chunn and Spanky Hayes. Tons of Love is a buddy comedy about romance and physical preference.

Two best friends learn that love comes in all different sizes. Alfred Johnson and Eric Daniels have been road dogs since high school. They have everything in common except their taste in women. Eric typically falls deep into his pockets for looks and is willing to go the distance to have a “dime piece” on his arm at any cost. Al on the other hand, loves a woman who can keep him warm beneath her healthy bosom during the winter nights. Big, bold, beautiful and pleasantly plump is the way he prefers to roll. They soon find out that real and true beauty goes much deeper than the surface.
